Jesus føres af Ånden ud i ørkenen for at fristes af Djævelen, efter at han har fastet i 40 dage og nætter.

Djævelen foreslår ham først at skabe brød af sten, men Jesus svarer, at ”mennesket skal ikke leve af brød alene”, men af Guds ord. Dernæst tager Djævlen ham med op på templets tinde og siger, at hvis han er Guds søn, vil Guds engle gribe ham, hvis han styrter sig ned.

Også denne fristelse afvises af Jesus, ligesom den sidste, hvor Djævelen tilbyder ham ”alle verdens riger og deres herlighed”, hvis Jesus vil tilbede ham.
